Grace Lutheran Chapel History
It was in March 1953 that members of Grace Lutheran Church of St. Louis purchased the four and one half acre site on which Grace Lutheran Chapel is located at
Hwy 367 and Chambers Road in North St. Louis County. This site was consecrated in a service held in October 1953.
In August 1954 ground was broken for the first in a series of three proposed buildings. This first building served as a Chapel and consisted of a Chapel Auditorium and a ground floor. It was used for worship services and Sunday School on Sundays and for organizational meetings during the week. The ground floor also served as a Christian Day School when it was opened in September 1955, with two teachers serving Kindergarten through four.
Grace Chapel Sunday School was begun in October 1954 with fifty-four children enrolled. Classes were held at Gibson Public School until the Chapel building was finished. In July 1955, the first class of five children was confirmed. In August 1955, a second worship service was added to serve a rapidly growing church attendance.
In June 1958. Grace Chapel congregation voted to proceed with the erection of a church building. The cornerstone was laid in October of that year. By this time three worship services were held in the small chapel building, attended by more than six hundred people. Over five hundred children attended two Sunday School sessions. The Christian Day School had grown to one hundred and twenty children in seven grades.
The new church building was dedicated in July 1959. Grace Chapel congregation now numbered nine hundred communicant members. Attendance in worship services had reached seven hundred with seven hundred children and adults enrolled in Sunday School and Bible Classes. The Christian Day School had one hundred fifty-six children enrolled in eight grades.
By February 1963, construction was begun on a Multi-Purpose Education Building, the third unit of the building complex.
This building was dedicated in January 1964. By this time Grace Chapel congregation had grown to nearly fourteen hundred communicant members with over eight hundred enrolled m Sunday School and Bible Classes, and nearly two hundred and fifty children mending Grace Christian Day School.
With its building complex completed, Grace Chapel congregation continued its growth. At the end of 1977, the congregation had nearly twenty-five hundred communicant members and over three thousand souls. With fewer children there has been a decline in Sunday School enrollment. Adult Bible Classes are growing. The Christian Day School enrollment is holding between two hundred to three hundred children.
The history of Grace Chapel congregation has been one of exciting overall growth. With its buildings complete and its membership stabilized, Grace Chapel congregation is now concentrating on the growth of each member, to
deepen knowledge and commitment, and to broaden dedication for sharing the saving word of God, in community, nation and
world.
